The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Friday, 1 May 2020 officially stated that the Bung Karno Main Stadium represented Indonesia in a voting entitled "The Grandest Stadium in the Southeast Asia Region". In its statement, the AFC said, "Asia has the best stadiums in the world and is an iconic place for thousands of fans to support their favorite teams. The AFC features some of the best stadiums in Asia, starting with five iconic stadiums in the Southeast Asia region. In the voting, GBK Main Stadium competed with 4 other stadiums namely the Australian Stadium (Sydney-Australia), Bukit Jalil National Stadium (Kuala Lumpur-Malaysia), My Dinh Stadium (Hanoi-Vietnam), and Rajamangala Stadium (Bangkok-Thailand).
GBK Main Stadium which has a variety of features can compete with other stadiums. Standing more than 58 years ago, GBK Main Stadium was the oldest stadium among the nominees, which was built in the range of 1998 to 2003. A neatly arranged steel roof called the "wristband" is also one of the objects highlighted by the AFC. GBK Main Stadium also attaches the name of the originator of this masterpiece, namely Indonesia's First President, Ir. Sukarno. In addition, special characteristics of the Indonesian people are inherent in the interior of the building in the form of paintings, carvings, sculptures and others.
